Shops around the U.S have been witnessing a huge spike in gun sales due to the rising COVID-19 cases and social unrest in the nation. This phenomenon can be studied through the number of NICS background checks for firearms, which went up to 3,740,688 in March, a steep rise from the 2,802, 469 checks in the month of February, 2020. 3,931,607 background checks were conducted in the month of June. This unprecedented panic gun-buying behavior has been attributed to the fear of living amid a pandemic and the protests as well as incidents of looting, and rioting.

With people queuing up outside gun stores in states such as Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma to make firearm and ammunition purchases, owners have been facing an inventory crisis as cities with a huge number of cases ordered nonessential businesses, including gun stores, to shut down in April. Retailers have been also struggling to stock up products because of the restrictions in place while gun manufacturers faced significant trouble in sourcing raw materials to meet the demand.

In the interview with Fox 4 Southwest Florida, Mark Fiacable commented, "Most of them [buyers] were first-time gun owners - never owned a gun. A lot of them said they didn't even like guns, but they were afraid and thought they needed to have something now."

Gun sales have been known to rise during periods of uncertainty—such as 9/11 and the stock market crash of 2008—and the pandemic brought about personal safety anxieties, fear of shortages, and government shutdowns. On that note, gun store owners believe that the increase in the number of first-time buyers will help them to expand their target market, and the gradual return to normalcy — starting from early July— has given them ample time to replenish their stocks and fulfill orders.
