What Is A Pole Barn ?

Many people don’t have ideas about the construction of a pole barn. This article is an overview of how a pole barn is constructed.

Pole barns, or pole buildings, are useful terms for a type of structure historically used for agricultural purposes. Today, however, these buildings are a great option for a wide range of needs. That’s largely because pole barn framing depends on an economical building method called post-frame construction.

A framing pole barn, or pole building, is traditionally a large agricultural structure which has no basement and has a high ceiling, and wide-open spaces. Laminated wooden posts are needed for making the frame, and today builders use the term post-frame building.

Those laminated posts as well as roof trusses are efficiently made with high engineering, using prefabricated components. There are also other advantages like durability, an economically built structure which is ideal for anything like a garage, workshop, or hobby shed or a storefront, event center, horse stable, or primary residence.

Post-frame construction is made using highly engineered, prefabricated laminated wooden posts which are also known as columns and are placed typically at 8 feet on center. They are buried 4 to 6 feet deep so that they can provide support. These posts are the prime vertical framing element in all post-frame buildings and are generally connected with wood sidewall girts.

For post-frame buildings, posts are sunk 4 to 6 feet deep into the ground, and there is no requirement for concrete slabs. Note that you can also add the slab. But it only costs you a fraction of the cost of a continuous foundation, which is generally needed for a stick-frame construction.

The concrete and excavating for a continuous foundation generally cost you around 15% of overall project costs. If you want to figure out a pole barn home vs. stick-built cost, you must keep this major point in mind. Pole barn construction involves fewer overall building materials than stick-frame. On top of that, the majority of components that are used are all prefabricated before they are brought to the building site.
