You might have faced situations in which you need to get a job done on an urgent basis but the manufacturing team is not sufficient to be able to meet the deadline. In these situations sometimes A machine part breaks and work comes to a screeching halt and ultimately the work gets delayed. And then, the fabrication unit comes to the rescue and delivers customised production by carefully constructing the product.

Now you must be thinking - Aren’t manufacturing and Fabrication SAME?......Well, the answer to this is NO!. These two commercially used terms are different from each other.

MANUFACTURING

Manufacturing is a process of creating a completed product for sale to consumers by using prefabricated components or raw materials. It is basically the process of converting raw material into a finished product i.e. producing something from start to finish. There are many different sectors that fall into the category of manufacturing such as Apparel, Chemicals, Electronics and electrical equipment, Fabricated metal, Food and kindred, Leather, Lumber and wood, Petroleum refining, Printing and publishing, etc. The process of manufacturing falls under five general categories:

Batch: Contract manufacturing provided by Fast Engineers & Fabricators falls in the category of BATCH because products are made in specific groups, within a strict time frame.

Repetitive: The same product is created all the time which is why it falls under the category of Repetitive.

Job shop: This is an open system without assembly lines and is useful for specialised or custom products.

Continuous: As its name suggests - it is continuous in nature and requires continuous movement.

Discrete: This may follow the assembly or production line method, but the products and the processes for creating them are varied and diverse.

FABRICATION

Now when we talk about fabrication, it's all about building products for commercial use or for manufactures and not for consumers. Fabricators process raw materials and are then assembled for later use. For Example - supply and installation of petroleum storage-tanks, Commissioning fuel storage tank. The most commonly used methods of fabrication include Cutting/Punching, Welding, Folding, Machining, Shearing, Stamping.

Powered wheelbarrow chassis

Mini dumper components

Commercial computer server cabinets

Integrated touch screen terminals

Manufacturing Vs. Fabrication

The major difference between the two is the amount of work and processes involved. Fabrication involves the assembly of standard or specialised parts to form parts of a product to be used in the manufacture of the finished piece. Manufacturing, however, is a start to finish movement, from the creation of parts through to the final assembly to produce a finished product, often using areas of fabrication within the manufacturing process.
