Lasik Surgery: Is the Option Right for You?

Doctors from The Eye Center discuss what to think about when considering Lasik surgery.

Columbia, S.C, July 18, 2016 – The mere thought of being able to put away glasses or contacts without vision becoming blurry is enough to motivate thousands of people each year to consider the option of Lasik surgery. This well-established laser procedure offers tremendous results and a long-standing track record of success. Even so, there are some things potential patients need to consider before they dive in with both feet. This surgery is not necessarily an option for everyone.

“Lasik surgery has been an approved procedure for nearly 25 years and has experienced a number of advances in this time,” say the doctors at The Eye Center. “There are some considerations, however, patients need to be aware of, including the reality that not everyone is an ideal candidate.”

Lasik surgery involves the reshaping of the eye’s cornea to correct astigmatism, near- or farsightedness. The process has an overall success rate of more than 90 percent and a complication rate that is very low. Certain medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, extremely thin corneas and other issues, however, may make a patient’s chance of success lower, eye care professionals stress. The surgery also isn’t recommended for those with unstable prescriptions and those who are under the age of 21.

“This is precisely why consultations are so important,” the doctors say. “It is our aim, and the aim of reputable eye surgeons everywhere, to ensure the best possible vision outcome for patients. In very select cases, Lasik may not be advised. Other alternatives do exist though, making a consultation even more important.”

A recent survey looked at patient satisfaction rates with Lasik surgery. It found that between 1995 and 2003 an estimated 95 percent of Lasik patients were pleased with the results they experienced.
