Lasik Surgery: Does It Last?

Doctors from The Eye Center discuss this surgery and its benefits.

Columbia, S.C, 2016 – While thousands of people have successfully undergone Lasik surgery over the past few decades, a number of misconceptions persist related to this procedure. One of them is the belief that the results of Lasik surgery are fleeting and that corrections to vision are not permanent.

“While changes in sight, such as age-related presbyopia, may arise after Lasik surgery, the effects of the original procedure are considered very much permanent,” say the doctors at The Eye Center. “Lasik has been proven to be highly effective in helping people correct their vision, but its results are not a guarantee for lasting 20/20 vision. While this goal is often attained initially after surgery, the reality is other vision-related concerns may arise over time.”

Lasik surgery involves the permanent reshaping of the cornea to correct near- or farsightedness. This laser procedure is performed in an outpatient setting and typically only requires a few minutes’ time per eye. While most patients report dramatic improvements in vision following Lasik, in rare cases touch up procedures must be performed to enable patients to enjoy the best results. Attaining 20/20 vision after surgery is often possible, but surgeons cannot guarantee this outcome.

“The ultimate goal of the procedure is to provide a patient with perfect or near-perfect vision,” the doctors say. “Due to the nature of the surgery, Lasik is permanent. the condition of the eyes, however, can change over time prompting the need for some to seek a second procedure or perhaps even revert back to using prescription lenses to compensate for age-related presbyopia.”
