Location can be the deciding factor to take great photographs. Sure an isolated lane with graffiti is a cool location for portraits, however, if you’ve a location like the Salar De Uyuni Salt Flats, that’s simply hard to beat.
With a little bit of pre-planning, your tour to Salar de Uyuni could result in some classic portraits to share with your family and friends back home. Explained here are some of our Salt flats photography tips and how to capture some of the best pictures on the world’s largest reflecting mirror – Salar de Uyuni.

Be clear about the goal of your photos:

The secret of taking superb pictures while at the salt flats is all about perspective. It’s not as simple as bring your camera and joust point and shoot. The composition of the image should be absolutely spot on! It is like capturing an image of the Eiffel Tower with your hand “supporting” it and totally missing where the tower really is.

Choice of subjects:

First, you’ll want to decide what the focus of the image is going to be. People vs. people or people vs. objects! Certain the more subjects you’ve in your image, the more complicated it’ll be to synchronize all of the subjects together. To make things easy, it’s recommended to have just 2 objects or people. If you’ve room in your baggage, a simple way to get a wonderful perspective portrait at the salt flats is to bring tiny inanimate objects. For instance, one very popular object to bring is a toy dinosaur. Other things you can carry include utensils/bowls, or any toy item you want.

Location of the photographer:

The photographer should be as close as possible to the first subject without cropping it out in any way. The photographer shouldn’t be frightened to get low to the ground or to do whatever it needs to get the snap. Most of the time people discover themselves lying down on the salt.

If you lay down, it creates the optimal level that sets the shot. If you take a picture from while standing or kneeling, it’s hard to create the delusion that the subjects are on the same level. Hence, dedication to the shot is important!
