The strong verticals and horizontals in Edward Hopper's Hotel Room are particularly effective in defining the space within which the room is confined. The verticals are used to construct the space, and the complementing unitary colors simply make the entire painting more believable. The horizontals also play a similar role as the verticals do. The two also combine to play with shadows and lights to authenticate the realism in the painting. The diagonal of the bed then leads the viewer to the background where one is more likely to understand the mood of the room. The near-architectural elements in this painting symbolize the tranquil and yet depersonalized environs of the hotel room, and the lush painting simply adds on to the drama that echoes the potential frustrations of the woman in the painting. It appears as a combination of realism and expressionism as the painter presents the emotions of the woman by using her surroundings.
The Arts, as a form of expression, are still capable of communicating the discontentment of the public in relation to the activities of the government. The information-saturated culture that may appear as a threat to the arts is actually an enabler that may be very instrumental in prompting people to appreciate the realities of their respective political contexts as happened with the Dada artists. Expressionism and fauvism would be particularly effective in such a context although other schools of art would as well be definitive in communicating the dangers of the government.
The painting is Thomas Hart Benton’s Pioneer Days and Early Settlers painted in the regionalism movement. Regionalism mainly portrays life as it was in rural America, with an emphasis on reality as would be perceived under the realism movement. This makes it the best form of historical documentation regarding what really happened at the time. The focus of the artist in this painting is the people who were working towards building of the nation in the rural setting. Pioneers and Early Settlers in rural Missouri were simply portrayed for their effort in the nation creating.
