An Introduction To The Process Of Electronics Recycling - Electronic Recyclers International

ERI is the leading recycler of e-waste in the U.S. Founded in 2002, ERI’s Chairman and CEO, John Shegerian, believes the company got to where it is today thanks to a strict dedication to its “green DNA.”

The process of recycling electronic devices is challenging. The reason behind is the use of multiple small components in manufacturing these devices. For example, while recycling a computer, the ITAD companies have to first remove the plastic then the glass and a lot of similar components. This recycling process depends upon the type of material recycled. This means that the recycling process for the computer can be different from the recycling process of a mobile phone. Let us see then general operations of an Electronic Recycling process:

• Collection and transportation of devices: In the first step of Electronic Recycling, the electronic devices are collected. There are a lot of ways for collecting these devices like setting up the recycling bins at specific locations. After this, Electronic waste is transported to the recycling plants. This is a time-consuming process as recycling companies want to collect the maximum e-waste for their profit.

• Separation: After collection, Electronic waste is processed and separated. Effective separation is important for better manufacturing of new products. It is also said that it is the foundation of Electronic Recycling.

• Shredding and sorting: First of all after separation, the components are sorted. After this, a general shredding technique is applied. This way the components are shredded into pieces of size approximately 100mm. After this, the components are sorted again. This time the process is not simple. A powerful magnet is used to separate the steel and iron from the e-waste. Now as steel is separated it is going to be recycled. After that, the same steel will be available in the market for sale purpose. Similarly, with the help of mechanical processing components like aluminium and copper are separated. To separate glass, water separation technology is used. After separation, all the components are recycled accordingly. In the final step, the remaining metal components are separated from plastics. Accordingly, they are recycled. This process
continues till the Electronic waste is purified and all the recyclable components are extracted.

• Preparing the components for sale purposes: As all the components are extracted and recycled, they are displayed for sale as raw material. They can be used in the production of new Electronic Devices like computers, mobile phones etc. The importance of these recycled components can be understood by the following statistics:

The total amount of Electronic waste generated by 2020 can exceed approximately 50 million tons. The annual growth can be between 4% to 5%. Now from this, the readers should note that only 20% - 25% of the Electronic waste is recycled. This means even after the presence of elements like gold around 70% - 75% waste still ends up in landfills. From this, the readers can also evaluate how quickly land pollution is increasing. These are just two reasons why everyone should pay attention to Electronic Recycling. As a result of this attention, a lot of companies are getting involved in the process and business of Electronic Recycling.
Now let us see some things people should consider before starting electronics companies ewaste recycling:

• Type of Investment: There are a lot of ways in which a person can Invest in an electronic recycling market. Depending upon the type of business, the investment can reach a few million dollars. According to the report of ISRI, the Investment can be low for small businesses. These businesses can just simply collect, keep stock and transport Electronic waste. Depending on the technologies, the investment for the biggest ewaste companies can be more than a few million dollars. With this investment, they can install sophisticated technologies like shredding and separation.

• Security of the location: The access to the scrapyard should be restricted. Not only this but there should be a proper implementation of monitoring policy. Both things are implemented to ensure the privacy of the information. This implementation has huge importance as most of the users throw their mobile phones and computers carelessly without hard drive destruction.

• Maintenance of safety standards: As there are toxic elements in the Electronic Devices, they should be handled with care. The company should maintain safety standards according to the government’s policies. Recyclers should have proper dust collection systems and uniforms.

• Involvement of government: As more and more companies are getting involved in the business of Electronic Recycling. The involvement of state and federal government is increasing. However, this involvement is for the betterment of their recovery rate.
