New Laws Expand Demand For Sunless Tanning Products

New laws passed in Delaware and several other states restricting the utilization of UV tanning equipment will likely expand the demand for sunless tanning systems.

The passage of laws in several states restricting potentially hazardous UV tanning booths will likely expand the already growing demand for sunless tanning products even further. Last year, for example, Delaware passed new legislation prohibiting minors from using UV tanning equipment, even with express parental permission. Concern that the state's melanoma rate had increased three times faster than the national average in recent years spurred legislative support for the passage of the measure.

Delaware becomes the tenth state in the United States to prevent minors from obtaining sun tans using UV tanning booth equipment. Some industry experts surmise that the passage of the new laws restricting UV tanning will likely expand the already significant demand for sunless tanning products.

One of the most important suppliers of spray on chemical tanning items is Sun Laboratories, a Chatsworth, California based firm that ships products nationwide. The company, a family operated entity founded by Gisela Hunter in 1983, produces widely recognized lines of spray tanning and self tanning products, in addition to accessories such as portable self tanning airbrush systems, professional self tanning system with booths, super flow triple ventilator booths, professional self tanning air gun systems and a wide array of combs and brushes.

Tanning salon owners in Delaware and other states which have restricted the access of minors to tanning equipment involving the use of UV light equipment may begin relying more extensively on sunless tanning options, such as spray on products.

Sun Laboratories reports that the firm carries sprays in a wide variety of shades, designed to accommodate different skin tones and tans of varying degrees of darkness. The sunless tanning process usually also involves the application of tan maintainer lotions to assist patrons in retaining sunless tan over the course of time. Salon owners may find that their role changes from providing tanning to functioning in a more comprehensive beauty consulting capacity as a result of these industry changes.

For example, Sun Laboratories' website indicates that the company offers volume discounts to salon owners. Presumably, salons in Delaware may begin promoting sunless self-tanning applications more extensively as a result of the legislation. The new Delaware statute obtained legislative approval last August, but the provisions of the bill did not go into effect in the state until January 1st, 2015.

Tanning salons in Delaware which ignore the new statute reportedly risk stiff penalties. A first violation brings a $250 fine, a second incurs $500 and subsequent violations can result in $1000 penalties. Some 20% of states in the United States now restrict or limit the access of minors to UV tanning booths, as a result of health concerns about the potential impacts of repeated exposure of skin to UV light.
