Are you a manager looking to lead your team more effectively?
Do you want more employee engagement from your team?
Would you like to be the kind of leader that inspires people, rather than order them?
Whether you’re a manager trying to develop your team, or trying to develop yourself and further your career, one of the ways in which you can be more effective as a leader is by using coaching skills in the workplace.
Coaching skills are leadership skills. This is a fact more and more companies are beginning to recognize. A study conducted by Bersin & Associates showed organizations with senior leaders who coach effectively and often improve their results by 21 percent compared to those who do not use this approach.
Companies are increasingly aware of the benefits of coaching and/or coach training for the leadership team, and the ripple effect this creates for their people and their ultimate results including the bottom line. Here are some of the ways in which coaching skills can create effective and sustainable change in an organization:
• Leaders engage with their team members as human beings and not simply as work resources. This leads to improved relationships across the business as well as connection to and effort within people in the organization
• Improved, connected, strong relationships result in supporting the leader to create successful outcomes, not simply because they have been tasked to do so.
• A leader who uses coaching skills gets curious about the people they work with, understanding them at a deeper level, including their purpose, values and beliefs. This allows them to motivate their team members more effectively by addressing what makes them tick at a fundamental level
• By understanding team members at a deeper level, it is also possible to align their values to that of the organization, leading to a more engaged workforce.
• Coaching supports turning problems which are challenges to be transformed into great opportunities of growth and expansion: a positive challenge and opportunity to take up and turnaround. This can provide a great sense of achievement and instigate new energy and inspiration.
Coaching skills are not just effective in the workplace – they also transform the way in which people relate with those in their personal lives – their spouses, children and extended family. Stronger relationships outside the workplace have a beneficial impact on people, and this usually extends to their interactions at work. It can truly provide win/win outcomes.
So, if you want to create effective and powerful change as a leader, enhancing your leadership toolkit with coaching skills is one hugely transformative way of supporting and empowering your people to create positive, successful change.
