The latest news reveals that the Birmingham City Council has laid a suspension on the number of payday loan stores in the city. This decision was taken after a long discussion among the council members on December 6, 2011. The license can be renewed. But the payday loan stores cannot shift to some other location for the next six months.

According to Councilor LaShunda Scales there are 93 payday loan companies in Birmingham that mint money from the poor and needy by charging high APR. Scales stated in the meeting that business other than payday loans must be promoted. "All I'm asking is that you give this moratorium life that we can right the wrongs of our community and make it more livable by having these different types of businesses that we know we can attract to the city," Scales said.

In this six months delay, the increasing number of same day payday loans store in a particular area must be limited. To support this Councilor Carol Smitherman stated that this short term business requires lot of amendment. She also demanded that payday loans must grow with Operation New Birmingham such that the rates are nominally charged. But the Birmingham City Council decided to handover this job to the Economic Development Department.
