This is achieved by "laying off" which is a term for a bookmaker betting on a horse with another bookmaker, or the TAB, to reduce his liability should it win.

 
Let's retire to the stable with a toast to trainer Bart Cummings, 12 times winner of the Melbourne Cup, deserving the nickname of 'Cup King', and also to Phar Lap, winner of the Cup during the Great Depression, and an enduring symbol of Australia's turf. No one will forget his winning spree on each of the four days of the 1930 Flemington spring carnival, which included the Melbourne Cup.

The Cox Plate is run at Moonee Valley at the end of October each year. It is renowned as the Weight For Age Championship and attracts the best racehorses in Australia. The race is programmed between the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and is the second richest race in Victoria carrying over $3 million in prize money. It is run over the unusual distance of 2040m.
