Imagine being in a situation where you were giving a speech, and a loudspeaker fails, disappointing right? There are many reasons why a PA system may fail, even the best ones like JBL Eon 615. These speakers work by amplifying sound from a connected component device like a microphone or even a handheld recorder like the Tascam DR-40 V2. They have a woofer, tweeter, and mid-range drivers. Whichever the brand, the working is the same. The sound moves into the speaker through a cable, which is then directed to the appropriate driver. Having explained that, here are some common problems and fixes to PA issues.

1. Unplugged or loosely-connected signal

Signal path interruption happens when the signal lead is not connected to a processor. Some equipment use radio signals, like in-ear monitors; therefore, a ‘virtual signal path’ must be established by setting the receiver and transmitter on the same level of frequency. Use a color scheme or number to mark all signal leads, making it easier to set up so that one knows which one to connect. It prevents improper plugging of signal leads.

2. Faulty cables

If there is an improper connection or cables are broken, it will cause a fault in the PA system. It is essential to use good quality cables from trusted suppliers such as Soundcraft or Stentor.

3. Unpowered equipment

A common problem with a PA speaker system is lack of power. If there are flat batteries, switched-off power source, or disconnected power cables, these will lead to the loudspeaker not working. Always have a spare power fuse with you to replace it when need be.

4. Muted equipment

Sometimes a person may accidentally press the mute button during a performance or event, which will make the system immediately shut down. Ensure that the person controlling the PA system is mindful of the mute button during a performance and only uses it when he/she needs to.

When you encounter a PA loudspeaker problem, there’s no need to panic. Most often, it is as a result of common easy to fix problems. Find the solution objectively.
