With so many readers, mystery is one of the top three most read genres in books. Most of us love solving puzzles, and mystery novels are ultimate puzzles, so it’s little wonder that this is such a popular genre. But a mystery novel to be enjoyable, its writer needs to build a plot that is mysterious and unpredictable. As Nicole Krauss said, “If a book is a mystery to its author as she’s writing it, inevitably it’s going to be mystery to the reader as he or she reads it.” And not all authors can manage to create a great mystery. The following is a list of some of the best authors of this genre.

- Agatha Christie
If you are a lover of mysteries, then you must have heard of this name, and most probably read a few of her books too. She is known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around her fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. The Mousetrap, written by Agatha Christie is a murder mystery, which is the world’s longest-running play.

- Stieg Larsson
A Swedish journalist and writer, Steig is particularly famous for his Millennium trilogy. Publishers Weekly has claimed the third novel in the Millennium trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, to be the most sold book in the United States in 2010.

- Stephen King
Though an author associated with horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy, Stephen King’s mystery novels are considered among the top mysteries of all times.

- Michael Connelly
Michael Connelly is an American author of detective novels, his most notable work being those featuring LAPD Detective Hieronymus Bosch and criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller.

- Arthur Conan Doyle
The creator of Sherlock Holmes, this Scottish author is best known for his detective fiction. His Sherlock Holmes stories are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction.

- Ruth Rendell
Rendell's best-known creation was Chief Inspector Wexford, the hero of many popular police stories, some of them even adapted for TV. Rendell also generated a separate brand of crime fiction that deeply explored the psychological background of criminals and their victims, many of them mentally afflicted or otherwise socially isolated. This theme was developed further in a third series of novels, written under her pseudonym Barbara Vine.

- Dan Brown
Dan Brown is the author of popular thriller novels, his most notable being the Robert Langdon stories: Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, Inferno and Origin. His novels feature themes of cryptography, keys, symbols, codes, and conspiracy theories, and three of his books have even been made into film adaptations.
