Any farmer knows that a proper and durable feeder is important regardless of which type of livestock a farmer manages. A feeder should be easily accessible by all of the animals, covered to keep out rain and in a location convenient enough to refill. There are quite a few options for livestock feeders available to meet a farm's individual needs.

A cattle hay feeder will work well for both small and large herds, although for farms who have an extraordinary number of cattle, farmers may find that one feeder is not enough. While the feeder itself may hold plenty of food, keep in mind that extra animals will need to find spaces to fit around the feeder. To prevent pushing and shoving, farm managers should consider adding a second or third feeder nearby for extra heads.

The two most common types of feeders are removable and stationery. A removable feeder can be hauled behind a truck or tractor and moved to different areas. This is especially beneficial for farmers who want to move their herd around to different fields since it means installing extra feeders will become unnecessary. For farmers whose herd remains primarily in one area, a stationery feeder will remain in one place and tends to be a bit larger and more durable than a moveable feeder.

Livestock feeders can be purchased at any feed store and delivery service is typically available. For farms who do not have a local feed store, online feed stores will also deliver to a number of different areas for a nominal fee. Some feeders can actually be placed around a bale of hay that is already present on a farm, while others require that the farm management regularly stock the feeder for the animals who eat from it.
