[Munster, 11/15/2017] – The Hospice of Calumet Area is on a mission to serve veterans with the challenges they currently face. The organization does so by joining the Hospice-Veteran Partnership (HVP), which coordinates care of VA patients with local community hospices. Through the We Honor Veterans program, they focus on respectful inquiry, compassionate listening, and grateful acknowledgment.

According to the hospice care, the later years can be a challenge, especially for veterans. The Hospice of Calumet Area believes that for these service members “approaching the end of life can refresh memories of traumatic events they faced during their service.” Other factors such as memories of enlistment or drafting affect how veterans cherish their years.

By supporting the We Honor Veterans program, the organization aims to give back by serving those who served the country.

Responding to the unique needs of veterans is one of the hospice’s priorities. By serving on the Indiana HVP (Hospice-Veteran Partnership) committee, they help develop and share the best ways to comfort struggling veterans.

As a partner of the We Honor Veterans program, the hospice has implemented several veteran-focused training modules to volunteers and other team members to improve their services. It also works with other local veteran organizations and social service agencies by providing compassionate care for ill veterans and their families.

The organization works closely with Adam Benjamin, Jr. VA Outpatient Clinic in Crown Point and Chicago-area Veteran’s Hospitals.
