Hospice of the Calumet Area helps individuals with life-limiting illnesses. The company helps individuals simply because it cherishes life and it wants to spread that optimism to those who feel like giving up.

[Munster, September 14, 2016] – Then known as Hospice of Northwest Indiana, Hospice of the Calumet Area started providing care to families in Illinois as well, after the need in bordering communities became apparent. They were granted the state certification, as well as Medicare to change their name.

Currently, the organization has provided their services to over 17,000 individuals and families – staying true to their belief of providing care for all, excluding no one just because of their inability to pay.

Services Offered

They offer hospice care for those who live with serious illnesses, hospice aides to build knowledge and confidence to caregivers, bereavement programs, and a Transitions™ support team to provide companionship and assistance with tasks.

Care Team

Their hospice care team involves a group of professionals from various fields to address their patients’ physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Their certified physicians admit terminally ill patients to the hospice. They write and validate orders for medication, equipment, and treatments; receive updates regarding the patient’s condition; and monitor the progress of the illness.

Other members of their team are the nurses, social workers, spiritual counselors, hospice aides, volunteers, grief counselors, and the Board of Directors.

Inpatient Facility

The hospice has a place for those who need their services, but are not capable of being alone: The William J. Riley Memorial Residence. This place provides assistance and care for those living with life-limiting illnesses, yearning for peace and comfort for the remaining time of their lives.

Thanks to their generous donors, they are able to provide their services at the residence, regardless of their patient’s ability to pay.

About Hospice of the Calumet Area

Considered as Northwest Indiana’s first hospice, the Hospice of the Calumet Area provides the highest quality care to individuals suffering from life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families. Brainchild of Bishop Andrew Grutka of the Diocese of Gary in 1979, he first appointed members of the clergy, as well as medical leaders to investigate the concept of end-of-life services and came up with a specialized home care program that would help individuals in the last six months of their lives.
