North Hollywood, CA - Dr. David Neiman’s lecture on Joseph and the Exodus will be available on YouTube - in full - starting today through the end of the Passover holiday on the 30th of April. This fascinating lecture gives insight into the historicity of the Biblical account. The late Dr. Neiman’s knowledge and understanding of pre-Biblical literature gave him the ability to place the Passover story in context.

Dr. Neiman describe how Joseph rises to the position of “TzafnatPa’aneakh” , or as Dr. Neiman translates the title into modern terms, “Chairman of the Federal Reserve” of Egypt. Joseph gained this title by successfully helping the Pharaoh of Egypt with his economic plans through “dream interpretation”. Under Joseph’s guidance all land became the property of Pharaoh.


Dr. Neiman corrects misconceptions regarding the story of the Exodus. For instance, The Pyramids were already ancient when the events recounted in the Passover Haggadah occurred.The Israelites did not build the Pyramids.

When the Jews were enslaved they were forced to build the storage cities of Pithom and Ramses. These cities were arsenals for the armies of Egypt. When examining the Egyptian historical records of the period, it is clear that Pharaohs Seti I and Ramses the II were on the warpath.


Ramses II was defeated at the battle of Kadesh by the Hittites. The loss of the largest Bronze Age army in history weakened Egypt and that vulnerability created the conditions in which the Israelite flight from Egypt could occur.


Dr. David Neiman (1921-2004) was an internationally renowned scholar, speaker, and writer who inspired many people. His life's work concerned the intricate relations between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism throughout history and in modern times. Dr. Neiman made history come alive through his dramatic presentations and unique interpretations. In light of our current world situation, Dr. Neiman's work is not only extremely relevant but also remarkably prescient. More than anything, Dr. Neiman was a keen observer of the human condition. His words convey our shared history with clarity, humor, and humanity.


Dr. Neiman was the first Jewish scholar appointed to teach Religion at Boston College, one of America's leading Catholic Universities. He served as Professor in the Department of Theology for a quarter of a century. While there he was also invited to teach at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After retiring from Boston College, Dr.Neiman moved to Los Angeles, where he taught at Loyola Marymount University, St. John' s Seminary in Camarillo and the University of Judaism in Bel Air.
