Football Agents

The role of a soccer agent is to help market their client in order to maximise their commercial possible whilst also protecting their wants in contractual negotiations with their clubs or even wanting to assist a transfer to another club. The broker will lead to discussions on their clients behalf with managers, club manager's and attorneys whilst advising their client on options available. The agent will also be heavily involved in handling their customers public relations matters, financing and taxation.

The part of the agent has taken off in accord with the success of the English Premier League, clubs yearning and competing for the best players whilst having substantial wage budgets due to SKY TV money has meant the power has moved from clubs to gamers, of course this was magnified from the landmark Bosman judgment that means players can transfer freely at the end of their contract. This power in the hands of players has given representatives a chance to maximise their clients positions.

It is apparent that agents are valuable to the athletes. The broker brings skills which the soccer doesn't have such as people in business, marketing, finance and law. Professional soccer is a short career and these guys are in the top of their profession and so seek to make as much cash as they can in this time period. In that respect it's no different in the elite of some additional professions, bankers or attorneys for example.

But are brokers great for football? This question is much more difficult to answer and in many cases is very likely to bring a negative response. The main advantage to the sport is the way in which they have helped to market the game through their customers, the general public appeal of figures such as David Beckham brings increased earnings, media attention and interest to the game. However there is a darker aspect to the match that's amplified by the agents. In any industry with massive financial resources there'll be some who seek to extract a share of this source. Not by the author of this article, but it's been leveled that brokers involve themselves in the move of players behaving as "middle men" who take a large sum (rumoured to be millions of pounds) for organising player/club talks. The very recent instance of the demise of Portsmouth FC has revealed enormous debts in the region of 140million, a huge percentage of this is down to payments to agents, with an even larger percentage being due to the astronomical salary paid outside, no doubt in part influenced by agent requirements. Whilst agents can not in anyway be entirely blamed for this situation it's maybe a pertinent illustration of the direction the game has taken along with also the role that agents hold in the modern game.

Whether individuals decide that agents are great for the game or not, it's clear that they have experienced a significant role in developing the sport to the advertising success it currently is, it is apparent that they're here in order to stay, possibly their role may change later on if legislation enforces it by the Football institution but the monetary benefits they bring to their clients means that the players will be eager to keep their agents.
