Maria Padian has brought up some issues like romantic rivalries, family pressures and class tensions. A small town in Maine is flooded with refugees who are finding the meaning of life and a way to live. At Maquoit High School, Tom Bouchard is a topper in academics and star soccer player. He is the boyfriend of one of the prettiest girls in the school. But the life in Maine gets upside down after 9/11.

The refugees from Somali have made this place their secondary immigration. The war situation in Somali has forced everyone to find better opportunities in Maine. They cannot return home due to war situations. The cultural differences that the students come across in their daily lives are described wonderfully by Maria. Tom is uncomfortable with his family who is working class and a college educated aunt. He likes the Somali kids in his soccer team This Somali student can hit impossibly in the game of soccer.

There are more and more immigrants coming to the city. Tom is now forced to pick sides. The richer towns and amazingly laying Somali players now challenges the eligibility of a star player Saeed. The concerns of among the locals are at an increasing level. Racism has held its place in the eyes of citizens. The worries about infrastructure are now at hype. All these problems are creating the people worry about future and their fight to achieve a better life.

This leads to a situation when Saeed’s eligibility is questioned. The students from Somali vanish as quickly as possible. Tom is found going nowhere and he does not even desire to head anywhere due to the pertaining problems. The last part of Maria’s creation changes Tom’s view towards life. This happens when his father asks him “Aren’t you lucky?”. This question from his father makes Tom wonder about the Somali students.

This is a beautifully crafted novel by Maria Padian. If it is read from a viewpoint of an immigrant, it gives us an opportunity to know the struggles experienced by the immigrants or refugees. In the harsh world, there happen to be tragedies. The story makes us aware of the struggles and hardships that the refugees encounter on daily basis. If we can connect to Tom’s father’s question “Aren’t you lucky?” We can connect to the morale of the story which has been wisely explained by Maria Padia.

Maria Padian has crafted some more books which includes: Brett McCarthy: Work in Progress, Jersey Tomatoes are the Best and Wrecked.
