Wine clubs are becoming popular today with the food and beverage industry and are available in an enormous number of styles and options. While some clubs are dedicated to California wines there are others that focus entirely on Champagnes or Sparkling wines. As the choices are almost limitless, it's important to do your own research or read wine club reviews and analyze the following areas:

The quality of wine:

This is supposed to be the major factor in the success of any wine club. Some clubs do utilize discounted bottles and vintages as a portion of each month's shipment but could be easily identified by an expert who will comment on every single selection. For example, if a club promises the best California "boutique" wines, an expert will be able to point out any discrepancies in the selections.

Popular wine club reviews will itemize the traditional characteristics of wine on a bottle by bottle or vineyard by vineyard basis. These reviews rely on the classic "gold star" system to identify how well the club performs.

Wine education:

Many people enroll in a wine club for the purpose of newsletters and printed information that accompany their monthly/seasonal shipments. ie. the grapes, region and particular vineyard where the wine was produced, etc. This can help to train their palette and enable to recognize things like a bouquet, flavors, and aromas. As an example, if you purchase a bottle of wine that was aged in oak, it could have a very distinctive flavor. A wine club review should indicate every information included along with every shipment.

Further, a wine club review should scrutinize the club’s educational materials for food pairing information, because wine is not always intended to be sipped without the benefit of food.

Value:

If a wine club happens to deliver substandard vintages, the wine club review should be able to identify this fact and alert the consumer to the lesser value of such a membership. A wine club dedicated to enhancing the value of a cellar will offer premium cellaring vintages at a good cost.
