Benefits and Uses of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a substance similar to a vitamin. It is found in every cell of the body. Your body makes CoQ10, and your cells use it to produce energy your body needs for cell growth and maintenance.

It also functions as an antioxidant, which protects the body from damage caused by harmful molecules. CoQ10 is naturally present in small amounts in a wide variety of foods, but levels are particularly high in organ meats such as heart, liver, and kidney, as well as beef, soy oil, sardines, mackerel, and peanuts.

Coenzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinone, ubidecarenone, vitamin Q10 or CoQ10) is an oil-soluble substance is present in most eukaryotic cells, primarily in the mitochondria. Coenzymes help enzymes work to digest food and perform other body processes, and they help protect the heart and skeletal muscles.

CoQ10 Deficiencies
Your body produces less and less CoQ10 as you get older. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, deficiencies can appear in people with certain metabolic disorders. Although your body produces its own CoQ10, it can also be obtained from food. The best sources of CoQ10 are oily fish and organ meats, such as beef liver. Coenzyme Q10 can also be found in whole grains.

People with certain conditions, including diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and heart problems tend to have low levels of CoQ10 in their bodies. Researchers don’t know if the disease causes the deficiency or if the deficiency appears first, causing cells to age faster and making disease more likely.

Uses of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10):
Many claims are made about CoQ10. It is said to help heart failure, as well as cancer, muscular dystrophy, and periodontal disease. It is also said to boost energy and speed recovery from exercise. Some people take it to help reduce the effects certain medicines can have on the heart, muscles, and other organs.
• Although CoQ10 plays a key role in the body, most healthy people have enough CoQ10 naturally. Increasing age and some medical conditions are associated with decreasing levels of CoQ10.
• Nonetheless, CoQ10 supplements can help lower blood pressure slightly. A study published by the US National Institutes of Health says that some small clinical trials seem to show that coenzyme Q10 supplements can be used to lower blood pressure. However, it concludes, "larger trials are needed to determine if they are truly effective."
• CoQ10 is also used in some parts of the world to treat heart failure and other heart conditions.
• Preliminary studies have been carried out on CoQ10 as a potential treatment for neurodegenerative disease.

Preliminary Clinical Studies also suggest that CoQ10 May:
• Help prevent migraines
• Improve exercise ability in people with angina
• Improve immune function in people with HIV or AIDS
• Be used as part of the treatment for Parkinson disease
Scientific studies are needed to see whether CoQ10 can be safely and effectively used for these health problems and needs.

CoQ10 Dosage:
• Do not give CoQ10 to a child under 18 except under the supervision of a health care provider.
• For adults 19 years and older: The recommended dose for CoQ10 supplementation is 30 to 200 mg daily. Soft gels tend to be better absorbed than capsules or other preparations. Higher doses may be recommended for specific conditions.
• CoQ10 is fat soluble, so it should be taken with a meal containing fat so your body can absorb it. Also, taking CoQ10 at night may help with the body's ability to use it.

Precautions of Using Coenzyme Q10:
Because of the potential for side effects and interactions with medications, you should take dietary supplements only under the supervision of a knowledgeable health care provider. CoQ10 appears to be safe with no major side effects, except occasional stomach upset.

CoQ10 may lower blood sugar, so people with diabetes should talk with their provider before taking it to avoid the risk of low blood sugar.
