The Impact of Divorce on Kids

Posted May 2, 2016 by divorcecenter

Dissolving a marriage is never something that will be easy. Everyone involved will most likely be hurt. But when children are involved, it can be an even bigger task making sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Children of different ages can be impacted differently. Because children are so dependent on both parents, they will most often start to become even more dependent. They may become clingier to both parents and they will want to be reassured that they are still loved. On the other hand, teenagers will often withdraw and become more aggressive with both of the parents, or the one they feel is to blame. This can make them moodier than before, and often times, they will act out to try and get attentions.
Divorce can also really impact the children’s school work. It is common to see that when a child has parents going through a divorce, they can suffer academically. This could be because they are worried and unsure of what their lives will be like now. Or it could be that they act out and want attention. This can happen at any age, and it is important to note that not all children of divorce suffer, but it is a common thread.
The biggest area that children are impacted is their emotional health. It really does not matter what age they are when the divorce happens, these children will always carry around certain things in their psyche that hurt them. They may develop trust issues from this or they could become scared to commit later in life. Either way, when they see their parents’ divorce, this will ultimately affect their view on all relationships in the future.
There is no easy way to go through a divorce with children involved and have it be clean and happy for everyone. They will be impacted and the best that the two parents can do is try and explain that while they may not love each other anymore, they most certainly still love the child. Lessening the blow may help the intensity of any future fallout from the child.
