Dillon Kim, co-founder of the popular mobile dating app LocalDates, announced yesterday that he will be making a contribution to the school’s scholarship fund.

SCU alumnus Dillon Kim has announced a contribution to the University’s scholarship fund.

Kim graduated from Santa Clara University in 2010. He enrolled at age 48 after working for twenty years as an HVAC technician in Santa Clara, California. Kim learned everything he needed from the Computer Science program at SCU, and went on to help found the popular mobile dating app company LocalDates in Austin, Texas. LocalDates allows singles to meet up at popular Austin-area bars and restaurants and take advantage of exclusive deals and offers.

Dillon Kim says that he owes his success with LocalDates to Santa Clara University and their Computer Science program, which prepared him for his new career and gave him an opportunity to make his second career a successful one. Kim wanted to give back to the university that helped him out so that more students could attend and receive the same top-notch education that he did. Toward this end, Kim said he will donate an undisclosed sum to the school’s scholarship fund.

Dillon Kim of Santa Clara University has changed careers multiple times in his life and he is always looking for his next challenge. That’s why he moved to Alaska at the age of 18 after high school. He drove there from California in an old car he fixed up himself. After ten years in the Last Frontier, working on fishing boats and wherever else he could find work, Kim returned home to Santa Clara, married his high school sweetheart, and went to trade school, where he learned how to be an HVAC technician. He enjoyed working with his hands and helping private residents and businesses heat and cool their homes more efficiently, but after twenty years, he knew he was ready for his next challenge.

Dillon Kim decided to enroll in Santa Clara University at the urging of his wife, who wanted to see him take on another challenge if he so wanted. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and went on to success in the mobile app industry. He hopes that his donation will help others find their next challenge and create opportunities for new technology and products in the future.
