Various studies that have used experiential therapy to treat patients with dementia and eating disorders presented improvements and positive effects on well-being and eating habits.

[DENVER, 12/21/2017]—Psychology Today defines experiential therapy as a therapeutic technique that uses expressive tools and activities like arts and crafts, music, animal care, and acting. The experience can determine emotions associated with success, disappointment, responsibility, and self-esteem and release negative feelings of anger, hurt, or shame. Experiential therapy is commonly used in treating substance abuse, trauma, and eating disorders to name a few conditions.

Experiential Therapy for Anorexia and Dementia

A study published in the Journal of Eating Disorders focused on the role of music therapy in patients with anorexia nervosa. The researchers found that music therapy significantly decreased the anxiety levels of the patients. The treatment also had effects on the patients' thought process and positively affected their eating habits.

Researchers from Hangzhou Normal University School of Medicine looked at the effects of art therapy on patients who have dementia. They found that art therapy improved verbal skills and other cognitive functions of the patients. According to the researchers, art therapy also became an alternative means of communication that allowed self-expression of dementia patients with impaired language abilities. Through the colors, lines, and illustrations created by the patients, loved ones and caretakers can have a better understanding of the patient, the study suggests.

Art Expression for Patients with Eating Disorders

EDCare, a facility that treats adults suffering from eating disorders, uses experiential therapy as one of their methods. They provide art therapy to their patients that present a beneficial, visual, and relatable record of their progress.

According to EDCare, “As a visual language, art is a powerful means of expression for patients with eating disorders. Art Therapy helps them tap into their creative and authentic selves, and gives them comfort and a powerful tool for expressing the shape of their feelings and how they perceive their physical self.”

EDCare also uses other experiential therapy methods including instructive cooking and yoga.
