A retropharyngeal abscess is a serious infection, usually starts in the lymph nodes, characterised by collection of pus at the back of the throat. Retropharyngeal abscess typically occurs in children under the age of eight, sometimes it can also affect adults. The symptoms of retropharyngeal abscess include difficulty or noisy breathing, difficulty and pain while swallowing, drooling, severe cough, severe throat pain, neck stiffness or swelling, muscle spasms in the neck among others. The causes of retropharyngeal abscess are trauma or injury, medical procedure, dental procedures, alcohol intake, diabetes, cancer, AIDS, weakened immune system or a chronic diseases such as tuberculosis and others.
