School Safety Active Shooter Preparation and Training

Posted September 1, 2021 by defenderschool

Every time it occurs, our hearts break for the victims and their families. Unfortunately, the "thing" I'm referring to is a school shooting. Each of these tragedies might have been avoided.

A total of 60 active shooter events have been reported by the FBI between 2000 and 2019. On the other hand, 16 of the events happened on a college campus. The idea that someone might bring a gun into a school and shoot innocent children and/or young people is unfathomable. However, resolving this rising problem won't be easy. Sadly, there appears to be no end in sight to this complex social dilemma, which will demand compromise on a number of hot-button subjects.

What can the active shooter response center do?

An Active Shooter Mitigation Plan should begin with a strategic plan that outlines the aims and objectives of the plan for all schools in the district, from the school administration to the school board. As outlined in the plan, each school within the district will be held accountable for achieving the stated criteria. Reporting the results of the strategy to the school board on a regular basis will be done using a scorecard method.

How to Plan for Active Shooters

After that, let's talk about some of the most critical tenets that should be included in a school active shooter mitigation strategy. In order for both the school and the authorities to respond quickly and appropriately, they must be able to identify or discover problems at the school in a timely way. In addition, staff and students should be asked about any security infrastructure that may be available to aid in these detection capabilities, as well as how they may report any incidents.

However, there are several considerations and measures that may be taken to make students and staff safer in the event of an active shooter situation. The first thing you should do is maintain your composure so that you can contribute to an organized reaction that ensures instructions and procedures are followed. Observe the following method:

Consider your choices, such as running, hiding, or fighting, as you become aware of an active shooter scenario.

The hazards of each choice should be considered.

Decide which options are best for you based on your risk assessment.

It's possible that you'll have to rethink your first decision and maybe modify your course of action throughout the incident.

If you're in a room, try to block the doorway with furniture or, if it's safe to do so, lay flat with your feet against it.

Closing the curtains, locking the door, and turning out the lights, if possible.

Decide on a plan of action in the event of an emergency.

It's important to reduce noise in the room.
