The western film genre has been born in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century and its endurance over time has placed cowboy movies as a defining genre for the American cinematography. Even though the Wild West is still showcased in modern movies, a John Wayne DVD or an Audie Murphy DVD will never become unpopular, as they are the classics of this kind of movies.

Westerns are probably the oldest and the most representative American movies. They portray a time when cowboys were very common, riding in the saddle through the Wild West to protect the order in the frontier. They are showcased as fighting in the name of justice, repealing the wrong and saving the day when the evil makes the scene. In fact, the purpose of these movies was not only to entertain, but also to shape the society and promote some powerful values, such as morality, family, equality and so on.

Generally, the most common plot in western movies is built around the classic goal of maintaining the law and order. The conflict is usually between the good and the bad, but all the time, the victory is on the side of the hero and not on the side of the villain. This villain is portrayed most of the times as the opposite of the hero. He is the evil side of the good cowboy and the purpose of the main character is to destroy this source of evil. This conflict can also develop between two other different forces, such as human versus nature, or civilization versus wilderness and so on.

The most prolific era of the western movies lasted from the 1930s until the 1960s, but you can still find recently released movies with cowboys as main characters. Their flexibility is what assured their endurance over time and in spite of the disappearance of the majority of cowboys in real life, western movies continue to attract the public. Even more, classic ones are the most popular western films and any good connoisseur will appreciate a John Wayne DVD or an Audie Murphy DVD.

The most famous director of western movies was John Ford and his collaboration with John Wayne resulted into real masterpieces when it comes to cinematography. Another great actor who discovered his passion for cinematography after his service in the Second World War was Audie Murphy. He has been invited to join the mysterious world of westerns in Hollywood after his appearance in Life magazine as the most decorated American solider. He played in more than 40 movies during his acting career and today, you can find any Audie Murphy DVD in classic movies shops.
