Environmental studies look beyond the obvious human impact on our delicate global ecosystem. Yes, it is important to know “what” is happening and understand “how” to prevent it, but it’s far more critical to address the “why” and attempt to reconcile the varying interests. Environmental Law Programs are dedicated to developing the next generation of environmental leaders by addressing today's environmental challenges. A successful Environmental Law Program should encompass not only how to understand the environmental issues at hand but also how to mend traditional and modern philosophies across varying cultures and achieve an acceptable means of and use of natural resources. St. Thomas University’s Environmental Law Program explores the interaction of political, corporate and public interests and how they intersect.

The one-year, 24-credit LL.M. (Master of Law) program in Environmental Sustainability at St. Thomas University Miami Law School provides students with the legal knowledge they need to become experts in environmental law and gives them the practical legal tools needed for careers with economic enterprises seeking sustainable solutions, government agencies charged with monitoring performance and advocacy organizations driving change. Through this program, students can learn about such topics as: energy law and policy, which introduces them to the legal, regulatory and environmental concepts relevant to the changing energy industries in the United States; international environmental law, which explores international approaches to environmental problems faced by the entire planet, such as global warming and ozone layer depletion; and natural resource preservation. A student coming to St. Thomas University to obtain a Master’s degree in Environmental Sustainability also has the opportunity to take law school courses.

What makes St. Thomas Law School Miami unique among other Environmental Law Programs is that it provides students with hands-on training. As part of the program, students have the opportunity to leave the classroom for workshops and research facilities, both within Miami and outside of the country. Students seeking to spread the word about the responsibility we have to our planet can join the St. Thomas Environmental Law Society (STELS). This student organization continuously strives to create awareness of the balance between the increasing needs of humanity and our fragile planet.
