What we need to take into account when choosing whether to buy or rent a server is the fact that running a virtual private server, be it a Windows or a Linux VPS, gives us the same amount of features at much more smaller costs.

Most people find themselves asking whether it's better to get a real, physical server in order to run a website, or whether running it on a shared hosting server or a virtual private server is just as good. There is no one good answer to this question. This is because it really depends on the type of website that we want to host. Obviously, if we only want to run a small website, the best choice is to get shared hosting. It's cheap and, as long as we find decent hosting providers, quite reliable. Not to mention the fact that it is also a very fast way to get a website up and running. Most shared hosting providers also include website themes in their offers, which means that all we have to do in order to get our website running is to input our information in the theme, and voilĂ . On the other hand, if we are considering running a larger website, or possibly more than one website, then we are left with the other two options, getting a physical server or a Windows or Linux VPS. The main reason for getting a Linux or Windows VPS is that we would benefit from full access to our server, just as if we would have a physical one, without having to actually buy a physical server.

The great thing about virtual private servers is that we can choose the amount of resources that we would like our server to have, and then, if for any reason we are not satisfied with how the server is performing, we can simply choose a better configuration. A physical server has certain upgrade limitations, and is bound to become obsolete. Upgrading a physical server would thus involve, in some cases, having to spend a lot of money on buying a new components. Another downside to owning a physical server is that it would require a separate, dedicated internet connection. On the other side, if we choose to rent a Windows or Linux VPS, we wouldn't have to worry about internet costs or maintenance. Furthermore, we would also benefit from customer support that would even involve help with the configuring of the Linux or Windows VPS.

As long as we choose a reliable provider for our server, be it a shared hosting server or a virtual private server, both methods of hosting are equally good. What we really need to take into account before renting a Windows or Linux VPS is the fact that we would need a lot of expertise in designing the website, and that, depending on what type of website we want, we will need certain amount of resources on our Linux or Windows VPS. As there are many hosting providers out there we can benefit from great offers and services at reasonable prices, all we have to do is find the right hosting provider for us.
