Mikroscan, a company specializing in microscopy technology, introduces the SL5 Whole Slide Imager. This compact imager easily upgrades from whole-slide imaging to live telepathology.

[Carlsbad, May 27, 2016] – Mikroscan, a California based company specializing in microscopy technology, releases the SL5 Whole Slide Imager. The SL5 is a compact microscopy device that allows users to view sample specimens at varying levels of magnification. It also lends itself well to telepathology, allowing users to operate the device and view specimens from a remote location.

Compact and Portable

The SL5 is extremely compact and only requires one square foot of space. It is lightweight and portable, and weighs 32 lbs. Its inner microscope contains a complete set of objectives. Users can view whole slide images using the following objective lenses:

• 2X
• 4X
• 10X
• 20X
• 40X

The 60X objective lens is available as an optional attachment. The five microscope lenses are completely interchangeable and easy to use. According to Mikroscan, the images produced by the SL5 cover true magnification instead of a digital interpolation.

Setup of the SL5 also requires minimal IT configuration. It makes it simple for users to view sample specimens at their preferred magnification. It does not use digital enhancement and relies instead on true magnification. Mikroscan states that this allows for more accurate, high-quality images.

Whole Slide Imaging

SL5 is fully compatible with real time telepathology applications. It works with Mikroscan’s Qumulus and Q-Skan Software for digital pathology. It captures the full slide, giving users a complete scan of their specimen without any obscurations.

It has a scan speed of 45 seconds for a 15mm x 15mm area at 20X magnification. It features tissue-auto detection and automated white balance and camera exposure. Images are stored in a standard TIFF file format.
