Many people have trouble expressing how they feel and letting others know their emotions. Dale Guerrieri has found that expressing yourself through poetry is comforting and healing. Dale Guerrieri started writing poetry in the late 1960s after serving a year in the United States Army in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Dale Guerrieri came back home to the United States with a different understanding of the meaning of life and newfound respect for freedom.

Dale Guerrieri was looking for answers to new questions that had arisen. He was looking for direction and meaning, and wondered what his purpose was on this earth. Dale Guerrieri could not vocally express himself until he discovered that he could say what he felt through the writing style of poetry.

“It became my tool of expression.” Dale Guerrieri says. He found that through poetry he could be honest, let go of his hurt, let loose with his love, and use poetry to release his self expression.
“Poetry gave me the opportunity to discover unknown strengths that I did not know I possessed,” admits Dale Guerrieri. He says that it began to heal wounded feelings that he carried in life, and he was able to find a place to unleash his innermost thoughts and dreams. This is a poem entitled Truth:

Truth

The future is a window…the past a mirror
The present is a voice…time is an ear
Soul is elusive…the body a tool
Heaven’s a state…virtue a duel
Birth is the morn…death is the night
To live is a search…to love is a light
Fun is a lift…sorrow’s a fall
Happiness is a house…wisdom the hall
Truth is a hand…faith is a glove
Fear is a mountain…brave is a shove
No one is…what other men think
God is a chain…every man is a link

Turning to poetry, Dale Guerrieri found out the truth about himself and the meaning of his life experiences, which have challenged and rewarded him. He began to discover a new and different way to communicate, and found a different point of view on the emotions that he experienced.

Dale Guerrieri will tell you that poetry has given him the opportunity to be free and unafraid. He says not to fear the truth and what others think of you. Dale Guerrieri states that expressing yourself wholeheartedly and honestly will give you a chance to reach your innermost thoughts and provoke the thoughts of others. You don’t have to worry about how it looks or how it sounds – just write from deep within your heart and soul.
