EAT, PRAY, TED LASSO
One Superfans Ted Lasso Bucket List Journey

Lynnwood, WA Roger Williams is a big fan of “Believe.” Some might consider him a super-fan of the Apple + TV show Ted Lasso. In the show, Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, is the perpetually upbeat manager of the fictitious English football team AFC Richmond. He regularly exhorts his underdog squad to do just that, believe. In order to bring joy into his life, Williams also believes in the power of crossing things off his bucket list with intention.

Williams took a career break from teaching after 30 years in the profession, the lockdown, and two heart attacks in order to concentrate on the things in life that brought him joy. So, seeing the now-iconic filming locations for the acclaimed Ted Lasso TV series was at the top of his agenda when he planned a three-month journey across seven different countries to cross items off his bucket list.

Asked why he had become such a huge fan of the show Williams sayed, “I enjoy the positivity and laughs in Ted Lasso, but it was the show's commitment to deal with toxic masculinity, men's mental health and the importance of self accountability in open and honest ways that really drew me in.”

So how did visiting filming locations for Ted Lasso get on his bucket list? “I have always seen my bucket list as my list of things that bring me personal joy. If I had taken the advice of others on what I should have done with my five days in London, I would have spent all my time going to museums and looking at the exteriors of palaces. Doing the touristy things wouldn’t have brought me joy.” He adds, “My day of hunting down Ted Lasso filming sites was the best day of my entire trip.”

He started his day searching out the practice facility and exterior of the offices used by the show AFC Richmond Greyhounds and real life home of Hayes & Yeading United Football Club, a lower league English club. It took Williams two hours by train and foot to reach the stadium, but he says it was all worth it. “When I look at the selfies in the parking lot with all AFC Richmond signs still up and alongside the pitch with the stands in the background, my face hurts from the smile on it. Just like it did that day.”

He then spent an hour and a half on buses and trains to reach the Prince’s Head Pub in Richmond proper. Known as the Crown and Anchor in the show, it is the site of many dealings between Ted and his band of misfits. The show built a replica of the pub on a sound stage in London, but Williams says it is virtually the same. “I had been in London for three days and had avoided eating the British staple of fish-n-chips just to make sure I could say I had eaten it there,” he added.

Williams, who is best known as the host of the Top 10% Globally Ranked Podcast (listennotes.com), Crossing It Off, decided to flip the script for a special episode that would air on March 15, 2023, the same day as the start of Ted Lasso season three. Because season three of Ted Lasso is about to premiere and it's possible that it'll be the show's final season, he said, "During the vast majority of the podcast’s episodes I am interviewing guests about what they have crossed off their bucket list, but I made the exception to celebrate Ted Lasso by sharing one of my best bucket list moments." The host of the Stranger Connections podcast, Lisa David Olson, will serve as the guest host.

Asked for the best advice he could give others on crossing visiting filming locations from their favorite TV show or movie off their bucket list, he stated, “Those characters you love so much don’t live and work at these locations. Real people do. So be kind and thoughtful when visiting them. Just like Ted would.”
