Team culture perspectives by two leading companies

Posted December 12, 2017 by CorporateChallenge01

Corporate Challenge Events offers 38 different team building programs including charity-based events, all of which can be tailored for the needs and objectives of all clients.

Two leading companies have provided their perspectives on the importance of team culture and team building.

Sportsbet, Australia’s biggest online bookmaker, and Corporate Travel Management (CTM), an award-winning provider of travel management solutions, both attribute a positive team culture for their success.

Sportsbet and CTM have a strong commitment to fostering a positive culture through a range of initiatives such as regular corporate team building events, staff awards, professional development, and, fun activities for corporate events.

Q & A with Raj Tapper from Sportsbet and Susan Connor from CTM:

Q: What does a great team culture look?

Raj: A great culture means a work environment where everyone is excited about doing their best work. We’re real enough to know most people wouldn’t be at work if they inherited a pile of cash but we’d love to be the next best thing.

Susan: It’s defining what success looks like, breaking it down into tangible goals and identifying the necessary steps required to achieve the end goal. It’s equally important to have the necessary internal processes and systems to ensure everyone is supported in their role. At CTM, we believe in recruiting the right people with personal and professional values that align with ours.

Q: How important is internal culture?

Raj: Culture is very important to Sportsbet and something we think about constantly. We’ve all seen businesses that only pay attention to their culture once it’s broken. Our leaders invest a great deal of time and energy into protecting and evolving our culture as we grow.

Susan: Internal culture is one of our most important factors in gauging success and is one of the key drivers of our measurement of staff engagement. Each year we run an internal employee engagement survey which is a great opportunity for us to gather everyone’s valuable feedback across all parts of the business.

Q: Do you undertake regular corporate team building events?

Raj: Last year we held the Sportsbet Olympics inspired by the real Games in Rio. Our activities included an Executive Chair Race, Chilli Wing Eating Contest and Human Hungry Hippos. The crew who pulled the tournament together based it around our new values which had only been launched a few weeks earlier. Embedding values and getting buy-in to them is a hard thing to do so we were delighted to see how quickly they were being adopted.

Susan: We have a dedicated social club that runs regular team activities for each location. CTM also supports a number of local and national fundraising initiatives as part of our CSR and offers all staff a paid day of leave per year to volunteer at a charity of their choice. Our local leadership team days will also consist of a half day of training followed by a team building session. We hold two conferences a year and these also include team building activities.
