Matsuo Bashō was born in 1644 in the town of Ueno to a minor samurai family. While he is most popular for his haiku in the West, his movement diaries filled with Poetry of Hope got things started in Japanese writing. In his youngster years, Bashō entered the administration of Todo Yoshikiyo, who was likewise a writer. The whole journey involved walking around 1,200 miles through some of the severest terrain of Japan. Some of the roads were little more than trails.
