As the Covid-19 virus struck India in March, it caused tremendous disruptions in our day to day life. With lockdown being enforced by the Government of India as well as all the State Governments across the country to curb this virus, many industries had to shut shop and deal with all the economic turmoil caused by this pandemic. With people also having to deal with the socio-economics disruptions caused by this virus, many companies decided to help out during these challenging times.
With loads of companies having already started helping out, the GOI declared all expenditures related to activities on curbing the Covid-19 will be permissible avenues for CSR expenditure. This provided added incentive and an opportunity for companies to support society. Several companies began spreading messages about social distancing, ill effects of the virus, the importance of wearing masks, etc. through their various digital platforms. Several companies contributed large sums of funds to various Government led funds.
Cooper Corp. based in Satara, Maharashtra also took it upon themselves to ensure there is enough awareness spread in the entire district of Satara. As part of creating awareness, Cooper Corp. distributed 15,000 booklets on ‘How to Make Masks’ to the health workers across the district through the district collector’s office. As part of their sanitisation drive, they had Cooper fire-fighters spray disinfectants across district and government offices where employees were required to report to work, thus ensuring their safety. The fire-fighters also sprayed disinfection sprays in the Satara Civil Hospital and Khavali Quarantine Area where several medical workers were dealing with patients daily. They also sanitised several key bus stations and train stations, from where essential goods were being transported across the district. [3]
Cooper Corp. was also recognised by Minister Mr. Anil Deshmukh, MP Mr. Shrinivas Patil, and other government officials as they stood by the brave police force of Satara and helped them deal with the Covid-19 pandemic. Cooper Corp. CMD Mr. Farrokh N Cooper and Ms. Manisha Cooper were felicitated for the same. [4]
Although CSR activities are meant for the public, each company and its employees also must follow suit. Upon easing of the lockdown in Satara district in the month of June, Cooper Corp. began its operations with all the necessary steps. With social distancing norms in place, the use of masks, washing hands, and frequent use of sanitizers was encouraged which the employees followed to the tee. Daily temperature checks were put in place at the entrance to the facility. Employees also had to take part in education sessions on practicing safety norms even when at home.
The entire economy faces one of the most challenging times in recent years. This might be the most impactful event to happen to the world economy since World War 2, but with everyone pulling together we are looking at a healthy and prosperous future.
