More than 50 years ago, 20-ft shipping containers were open. The first containers were used to send items that could be loaded and unloaded by a crane into metal boxes. Malcolm Mclean, a North Carolina native, was the first businessman to load a ship with several dozen 35-ft shipping containers.

Newark, New Jersey, was his route to Houston, Texas. A shipping container is made of a body with upper and lower horizontal hollow chords on the bottom, top, and side walls. At the bottom and top, each of these chords has an opening. It has inner baffles sloping downward to allow runoff from dirt and water.

The cargo container is typically constructed from closed-top dry vessels of aluminium, rubber, plywood, fibreglass, steel or a variation thereof. The hinged rear door allows for cargo to be stowed and unstowed.

The shipping containers of today are made in several respects. Some are made of 14 gauge steel with an outside dimension of 20x8.5x8, making them a perfect storage unit on site. Containers are manufactured in many sizes with a height of 8, 8.5, and 9 feet, such as 20, 30, or 40 feet tall.

The aim of a 20ft shipping container is to store and hold something. It is suitable for choosing storage units for building materials, industrial use and home use in the short or long term. There are no pockets for a 40-ft shipping container. The bottom walls of both containers have u-shaped horizontal beams that are located halfway down the length of the wall and extend downward.

The walls have a top with one aperture, and along the beam there are several baffles. These baffles extend outward toward the opposite sidewall from the foot, and stop from the wall at spaced intervals.

Corrugated walls welded to the top, end frames, and bottom side rails have shipping containers made of steel. Steel castings used as the end frames are found on the 8 corners of the container and welded to 4 corner posts. They can be made of corrugated sheet steel or flat sheet steel on their roofs.

Steel is fitted to containers made of aluminium. The end frames and side rails are the parts of the containers with steel materials. The interior walls and roof bows that are welded to the top rails, bolted or riveted, are made of aluminium lined with plywood.

Another material used in producing shipping containers is the fiber-reinforced polymer, FRP. The container is framed in steel in this material with FRP panels fitted on the wall walls, roof, and front-end wall. To support the roof framework, there are no roof bows.
