Selective Outsourcing Is a Path to Success

Is outsourced contracting an all or nothing proposition? The most common opinion is that most organizations don’t do contracting very well, which would make contract management a viable candidate for outsourcing. However, others believe that an ever-changing global economy makes contracting a critical area of core competence and should be kept in-house. This latter philosophy may mean that you need to hire and train additional staff to manage your contracts, which may prove expensive and time-consuming. For some, the solution may be a blend of both outsourcing and insourcing.

First, define the contracting process

Perhaps the main issue is that many companies don’t approach contract management as a process. In fact, in some organizations, contracting remains a relatively disjointed set of activities: roles and responsibilities are not well defined; there are different agendas and objectives; and risk is not well communicated or managed. When companies fail to develop a contracts management strategy, legal risk and cost are increased. Before you can decide what to outsource and what to keep in-house, you must develop a contracts management process to isolate the gaps and determine where you need support.
