Kurukshetra University was established in 1956 by late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. Initially known as Sanskrit University, KUK has been accredited with A+ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The university has been ranked 8 among the state universities in Category-I by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

It also ranked 99 under the 'University' category by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF 2020).

KUK offers 175 courses on the campus in 47 Departments/institutes and through 282 affiliated colleges and institutes in seven districts of Haryana. It offers BA, BSc, BPharma, BTech, BA LLB, BFA, BA LLB (Hons), BHMCT, BPharma, BA in Mass Communication, BSc in Graphic and Animation, and BTech as its UG courses. It also offers BTech in six specialisations. At the PG level, it offers MA, MSc and MTech programme in various disciplines at the PG level.
