Anna University is a state-level university that is accredited with a "A" grade by the NAAC and is recognised by the UGC. It's a member of the Association of Indian Universities, as well (AIU). The NIRF ranked the University 14th in Engineering in 2020. The University, which was founded in 1978, now provides over 50 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses through its eight faculties, as well as over 100 degree and diploma courses through its 500 affiliated colleges.

On the university campus, courses are given by eight faculties and nearly 30 departments. Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Humanities, Faculty of Architecture & Planning, Faculty of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, and Faculty of Information & Communication Engineering are the names of the constituent faculties.

All programmes at Anna University are admitted through national-level entrance tests like NATA, TANCET, GATE, UGC NET, CSIR NET, and TNEA counselling. Admission to remote education MBA and MCA programmes is done through the Distance Education Entrance Test (DEET), whereas candidates for MSc programmes are chosen based on their qualifying test scores.

Over 14,000 PhD students have enrolled in Science, Engineering, and Technology at the university so far. For its students, the University campus has more than 20 research centres organised into streams such as Technology, Science, Management, and Education, among others.

The placement cell at Anna University is in charge of all placement-related activities. Top organisations such as Wipro, Ashok Leyland, Infosys, and Accenture have all hired students from this university throughout the years. During 2020 placements, the average and maximum salary packages offered were Rs 4.71 LPA and Rs 6.57 LPA, respectively. Mechanical Engineering students can also apply for a scholarship worth Rs 17 lakh from the university. Students from other University departments can also apply for a scholarship worth Rs 10 lakh.
