Guild Wars 2, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, was released in 2012. The title is unique in that its story is player-driven, a usual feature in single-player games but rarely seen in multiplayer RPGs. Rather than an open MMO world similar to games like World of Warcraft, the world of Guild Wars is a persistent environment with much of the gameplay taking place in instanced zones.

Like many other games, Guild Wars 2 will often feature special seasonal content based on the holidays. Developer ArenaNet posted on the official Guild Wars website that the annual “Wintersday” competitive events will be taking place from December 16 to January 13. In true holiday spirit, Wintersday events pit players against each other in an ongoing PvP setting.

This year’s Wintersday competitive event for Guild Wars 2 is called “World vs. World: Sneak Attack.” In this competition, every time a player kills another in World vs. World, a point is given toward the player’s world score. If the winning fighter uses a finisher while his world has Borderlands Bloodlust, his world will earn another bonus point.

True to the “Sneak Attack” moniker, objectives that are under attack during the Wintersday event will not show up as white sword indicators to alert players. This will allow stealthy fighters to infiltrate enemy territory and wreak havoc, engaging in sneak attacks to catch their foes off-guard. Defending players are also encouraged to patrol their own territories and root out any enemy “commandos” who might be lurking about.

The Wintersday event for Guild Wars 2 also introduces the “Mist War Summons” effect. This gives players a bonus of 15% WXP, 15% more experience in kills made in World vs. World, and a 50% increase in magic find in WvW. This effect will run for the duration of the Wintersday event through January 13.

Along with the holiday content, the PvP matchmaking and leaderboards have been changed up in Guild Wars 2 for the duration of the Wintersday event. Players are encouraged to head into the Ranked Arena to duke it out for the chance to score exclusive prizes.

ArenaNet has announced its plans to bring a new event into the world of Guild Wars 2 this Christmas with the launch of Wintersday, which runs from December 14 to January 3.

The event, which was detailed on the game’s official blog, is described as celebrating the children of Tyria’s love for toys:

“The nights may be long and dark, but Tyrians of all races keep joy alive during the ancient holiday of Wintersday. While each race celebrates Wintersday in their own unique way, children all over Tyria share a common love of one thing: toys.

“This year the city of Lion’s Arch will host the asuran Toymaker Tixx as their special Wintersday guest of honor. Before Tixx arrives in Lion’s Arch in his massive airship toy workshop, he’ll visit every major city in Tyria to deliver Wintersday toys and holiday cheer.”

With the launch of the event, the city of Lion’s Arch will be decked with festive cheer and Christmas—or rather, Wintersday—décor to celebrate the event. Other areas in the game, like Zommoros’ Mystic Forge, has been transformed into a giant snow globe holding holiday activities.

The game will also see the addition of Wintersday PvP activities involving snowballs, and a musical activity in the Bell Maestro.
