Irving, TX, Jan 17, 2016 – Helping people diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer enjoy the greatest chances for survival and the highest quality of life is a concern for healthcare providers across the country. A new study is shedding light on the potential benefits intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) may have to offer.

“This form of radiation is often image guided, providing a more precise delivery of radiation directly to the source of the tumor,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Choice Cancer Care. “When coupled with concurrent chemotherapy, IMRT may also deliver benefits that traditional radiation cannot.”

The study in question was conducted at the Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. There researchers looked at data related to 482 patients who underwent radiation therapy between 2007 and 2011. Of the patients, 47 percent underwent more traditional forms of therapy while 53 percent were treated with IMRT. All patients also underwent chemotherapy concurrently.

The findings, researchers noted, were promising. Researchers found about 44 percent fewer cases of severe pneumonitis in the IMRT group and also noted a higher percentage of these patients were able to complete chemotherapy.

“While further study is needed to benefit understand the effects and benefits of IMRT in non-small cell lung cancer, the preliminary findings are encouraging,” says Dr. Echt. “By lowering toxicity while enabling more targeted delivery of treatment, this form of radiation may very well enable doctors to treat the disease while lowering impacts on quality of life.”

Lung cancer is a very serious diagnosis. Patients who face this disease are encouraged to discuss all treatment options with their healthcare providers. Those who are at risk for lung cancer are also advised to inquire about screenings. Early detection and treatment may enhance prognosis.
