Dr. Gregory Echt, explains the process of Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging.

Decatur, Texas – March 20, 2018 - Alternative cancer treatments combined with other traditional cancer treatment therapy helps patients to deal with symptoms of anxiety, pain, nausea, stress or sleeping problems. Cancer doctors and oncologists work closely with patients to help find the best balance between medical cancer treatments and alternative cancer treatments.

“The way to decrease breast cancer mortality is by detecting it early using clinical examination and mammography,” says Dr. Echt. “However, some cancers may not be detected using the two methods particularly when it’s in its early stages when treatment is most effective.”

Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) is a molecular breast imaging procedure that shows the metabolic activity of breast lesions. The results of breast imaging are based on the way cancerous cells function. BSGI detects cancers that are difficult to diagnose.

The process of BSGI takes place when a small amount of tracing agent is injected into the patient and absorbed by all cells in the body. The tracing agent emits invisible gamma rays which are detected and translated into a digital image of the breast. Cancer cells have high metabolic activity, making the cells absorb more tracing agent, resulting in revealed dark spots. BSGI captures cellular function of the breast tissue accurately and is helpful when additional evaluation is required.

"With BSGI procedure, we can find cancers missed using ultrasound and mammography,” explains Dr. Echt. “The BSGI tests are performed right in our office, and they produce accurate results. Having BSGI may help prevent the need for some patients to have a short-term follow-up.”
