Aspirin May Prevent Colorectal Cancer: Studies

Irving, TX, Nov 17, 2015– Those low-dose aspirin tablets that so many people take daily to help prevent heart attacks may be silently serving another positive purpose. Researchers have found that low-doses of basic aspirin may also help prevent colorectal cancer. While the findings shouldn’t send people rushing to their drug stores just yet, it is offering a ray of promise for those who wish to lower their risks for this disease.

A number of recent studies have indicated that aspirin may play a role in lowering colorectal cancer risk for those ages 50 to 59. With that in mind, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recently issued draft recommendations for its use as a prophylactic. The recommendation only applies in certain, limited cases, but it does cast light on the potential this over-the-counter medication has to offer in fighting this form of cancer.

“The anti-inflammatory properties of aspirin are believed to help keep colorectal cancer at bay in some higher-risk patients,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at Choice Cancer Care. “Some studies have indicated that inflammation and colorectal cancer are strongly linked, making the use of aspirin to lower risk potentially beneficial. Daily use of aspirin, however, does come with a few possible side effects so it is advised that patients discuss this option at length with their doctors before incorporating it into their routines.”

People are concerned about colorectal cancer or who have been deemed high-risk are urged to discuss prevention options with their healthcare providers. Diet, exercise, weight loss and other measures may also help lower overall risks for some. Early screening procedures can also prove life-saving for those who find themselves at higher risk for the disease’s development.
