Chip Ervin Speaks About The Skills He Needed To Be A Quality Sports Official

Posted July 1, 2016 by chipervin

Chip Ervin worked as a baseball, football and basketball official for more than eight years, developing a reputation for quality work and fairness in all that he did.

Since he was a young boy, Chip Ervin has always enjoyed a passion for sports that has been reflected in nearly everything that he has done in life. He played in state championship baseball and football games while studying at American Christian Academy between 1992 and 1994, eventually earning a baseball scholarship to Shelton State Community College because of his skills. He later turned his attention to officiating, serving as the Umpire Coordinator for Dixie Youth Baseball for six years, in addition to officiating for both the Alabama Independent School Association and the Alabama High School Athletic Association for more than eight years.

His dedication to the sports he officiates in marked him out early as somebody who could be relied upon to manage games fairly. Chip Ervin has dedicated much of his life to learning about the intricacies of baseball, basketball and football, ensuring that every call he makes comes with a background of knowledge that allows him to explain his decisions, whenever he needs to.

He also enjoys ensuring that young people have every opportunity possible to use the sports that they play as learning experiences that help them in later life. This is a responsibility that he took very seriously during his time as a coach at Holy Spirit Catholic High and Bryant High School, and it is something that he always considered while officiating too. He has continually been happy to use his in-depth understanding of the sports that he officiated in to help younger players learn more about the game and how they could take what they learned and apply it elsewhere.

Ervin is also an honest and trustworthy individual, which is vital when officiating competitive sports games. He calls things right down the middle and does not favor teams or players. This means that he often needs to be able to deal with the pressure placed on him by players or team fans, but his coolness under such duress cannot be questioned.

Though he no longer officiates, Chip Ervin uses many of the skills that he learned during this period in his careers as a professional poker player and insurance broker.
