The lawn of the historic No. 1 Waitanyuan (the former English Consulate on the Bund), adorned with 21 glamorous and legendary antique automobiles, was turned into China’s first edition of a Concours d’Elegance last week (Oct.18-20) which is a most recognized worldwide premier celebration of collector cars. For the first time, the Concours rolled into China and pulled up to Shanghai with a long list of classic automobiles, collected by car aficionados from various parts of the world and throughout China.

The international level Concours d’Elegance included many impressive classics, among them a 1925 Renault Model 45 Tourer, 1929 Cadillac Limo, 1951 Bentley Mark VI Drophead Coupe, 1975 Ferrari 308 GTB, and the China-made luxury 1972 Hongqi CA773, and many other glamorous entries. It also featured the Porsche 917 KH Coupe, which won the World Motorsport Championship in 1970 and again in 1971, when it set the fastest recorded lap at 24 Hours of Le Mans, an incredible record that still stands today.
The three-day antique car celebration was not only an eye-opening exhibition for guests to get a quick yet up-close glimpse of the evolutionary history of luxury vehicles, but also an exclusive salon for the social elites, car fans and VIPs from all over the region and throughout China.
A high caliber judging panel, including Sandra Button, Chairwoman of the world-renowned Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach (USA), Iain Tyrell from the Formula 1 family and a renowned classic car restorer, James Knight, the Group Motoring Director of Bonhams, Brett Wheatley & Trevor Worthington from Ford, Miao Jun, Chief Editor of Car and Driver, Ben Gu, Vice-Publisher of Legacy Magazine.
“I wish to offer my personal congratulations to the organizers and the team of the first Bund Classic. They have hit the ground running, and I am sure that it will develop into a tour de force in the classic car calendar as it grows year on year. I am very pleased to have played a part in it.”, said Mr. Iain Tyrell.

On the morning of Oct 19, close to a dozen antique cars on display held a grand parade along Shanghai’s iconic Bund. Brands represented included Porsche, Ferrari, Ford, Lincoln and Rolls-Royce, offering the public a rare view at such classic automobile artistry as they slowly coasted along, draped by the Huangpu river and the iconic Lujiazui skyline on one side, and the European-inspired architecture of the Bund buildings on the other.
Adding to the full lifestyle elements of the event, the finest wine was provided by Advini, with daily tastings being offered in the lounge, and Taittinger champagne served from an elegant bar area set next to the Concours display.
The 3-day agenda included a fashion show from Shanghai Tang on the Terrace of No. 1 Waitanyuan. The pioneering luxury lifestyle brand from China presented its new collections of Fall/Winter 2013 for the guests of Bund Classic. An enlightening Wealth Forum was also organized by Citi Private Bank to give newcomers to the industry an insight into classic cars collecting. The forum included four highly qualified speakers, who each offered their expertise to the audience.
China’s inaugural Concours d’Elegance reached its peak on the final afternoon when the Best of Show award was named. A 1925 Renault Model 45 Tourer won the coveted “Best of Show” award at the Bund Classic Concours d'Elegance 2013. The award ceremony on the lawn of the No. 1 Waitanyuan ended on a high-note when James Knight of Bonhams, (a privately owned British auction house and one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques) announced the winners, bringing the event to itsdramatic conclusion. The other five awards presented included the Elegance Award (pre & post-1950), Chairman's Award and People's Choice Award (pre & post-1950).
“I am honored to be among the judges at the first Concours d’Elegance held here in China. Together we share a great appreciation for the beauty and technology of the automobile, and I am so glad that our shared passion for the automobile has drawn us together,” said the judge Sandra Button, Chairwoman of the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach (USA), who has been involved in the industry for almost 30 years.
All the awards winners took home beautiful trophies, offered by SHANG XIA, a brand promoting the heritage of Chinese design with innovative craftsmanship.
In addition, hosts of prestigious sponsors and luxury brands joined to build up this China’s must-see classic car event, such as Richard Mille, the main watch sponsor of Le Mans Classic and a key player within the classic car community, Axa Insurance and Riva, the legendary boat builder that just celebrated its 170th anniversary, among many others. Ford also celebrated the 100-year anniversary of the invention of the moving assembly line with a moving canapé assembly line in the villa of the Bund Classic to celebrate the century-old car-making revolution.
“I am very grateful for the fantastic support we have received from the judging team who is used to attending the most established classic car events in the world as well as from the sponsoring brands who have created a magical atmosphere over the three-day event.” Lignieres said.
