Defoamers Market Expected to Grow at a CAGR of 4.1% by 2020 - IndustryARC

Defoamers are foam control products that are used to rapidly destabilize the existing foam.

Defoamers are specialty chemicals used in various industries like pulp and paper, oil & gas, textiles, pharmaceuticals, detergents, lubricants, food & beverage and others to control foam generated during the production process. It increases the efficiency of the machines by destroying the excess foam formed during the production activity. A defoamer causes the foam bubbles to coalesce in order to reduce or completely eliminate them. The report takes into account the global defoamers market and provides in-depth analysis by three segments: type, application and geography.

Defoamers can be broadly classified into two types - silicone defoamers and non-silicone defoamers. Silicone based defoamers are polymers having silicone as backbone. It has silicone as the main chain concatenated with carbon and hydrogen molecules. Non-Silicone defoamers includeoil, ester and water bases. Defoamers are also segmented by their utility in different applications such as paper and pulp, paints & coatings, oil & gas, textiles, pharmaceuticals, detergents, lubricants, food and beverage and others.

The report covers four regions namely North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and rest of the world. Asia Pacific market has surpassed Europe and North America due to fast growth of emerging economies such as China and India. Stringent environment regulations have been enforced on companies manufacturing defoamers containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). As a result, demand for eco-friendly defoamers is on the rise in the Europe and North American regions. Companies like Air Products and Kemira have recently launched defoamer products with zero VOC content.

The global defoamers market revenue was $2.76 billion in 2014 and is growing at a CAGR of 4.1% from 2015 to 2020.
One of the driving factor is the cost effectiveness of defoamers in pulp and paper industry; for example, a quality defoamer in a brown stock washing in a pulp station will be able to improve cleaning efficiency, which will decrease pulp rejects, increase black liquor solids content and increase the green liquor salts that can be recycled back to the pulp digester. For each added solids percentage in the black liquor, the pulp mill can increase their revenue by $1 million. The paper mill will be driven by this added value approach, rather than a low cost basis.

Defoamers are used in an eclectic mix of applications. The usage of defoamers in all the applications is at the production stage predominantly. Hence if there are fluctuations in the end user industry it directly impacts the defoamer used in that particular industry; for example, paints and coatings industry is growing very rapidly due to humongous demand from the construction sector in APAC region, and defoamers are used in paints and coatings during its formulations. But in case of the textile production in China, it has plummeted in 2015 and hence the market of defoamers in textile applications in China has decreased. These examples delineate the restraints for defoamer.

Dow Chemical Company, Air products & Chemicals, Bluestar Silicones, Evonik Group and Kemira Oyj are the key companies operating in this market. They have been using product launches and expansion into new markets as the key strategies for the past 5 years. It is expected that consolidation by acquisition of smaller players in new countries will become more predominant in the next 5 years period.

Defoamers need to comply with the national and international regulations which govern their use in different applications. The regulation like U.S. FDA 21 CFR, governs food and drugs within the United States. There are few other regulations such as National Science Foundation, Kosher, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Toxicology Program (NTP), International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) used for industrial applications meeting local, state, and federal guidelines. Defoamers need to pass through all the regulations to be qualified for its use in end user applications. These regulatory standards are the benchmark for safe use of defoamers for all the applicable industries.
