Navi-Mumbai: The satellite city has seen a spate of conjunctivitis cases in the past few days. Also known as pink eye syndrome, the ailment is especially common among children, who are currently enjoying their summer holidays.

An ophthalmologist at Vashi NMMC hospital told TOI that around 20 cases of conjunctivitis have been reported in the last 10 days, and private clinics are also seeing an increase in cases of sore eyes.

“In the last two weeks, around 30 to 35 kids and adults have been treated at our hospital for conjunctivitis. Though there is no cause for alarm, we are advising patients and their families to take basic hygiene care in order to avoid its spread,” said Dr. Rajesh Mishra of the Sanpada-based Advanced Eye Hospital and Institute (AEHI).

He added that often, people purchase over-the-counter antibiotic eye drops once they notice redness or irritation in their eyes. “This is not advisable, as it can cause drug resistance. It is always best to consult a doctor for treatment,” said Dr. Mishra.

Private clinics in Kharghar, Kamothe, and New Panvel are also getting patients with pink eyes. “often, conjunctivitis cases are reported when there is a sudden change in climate just before the onset of monsoon. Allergic reaction to dust, heat, or even pollen caught in the eye can lead to redness and itching,” said a Panvel-based private doctor.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mishra added that it is a myth that one can be afflicted with conjunctivitis by just looking at the eyes of such a patient. “The disease only spreads through poor hygiene,” be added.
