Spectra Symbol Updates Its Linear Position Sensors with MagnetoPot Potentiometer

Spectra Symbol, a designer and manufacturer of custom linear potentiometers and position sensors, has released a new type of linear position sensor designed for contactless connection between the motion device and potentiometer.

[Salt Lake City, 11/13/2014] - Spectra Symbol, a Utah-based company with estimated annual revenue of $10 to $20 million, has released the MagnetoPot – a new type of potentiometer that tracks motion in a contactless manner. This model works better compared to the end Reed Switches used in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, as it provides full-travel position sensing using magnetic forces through a potentiometer output.

What are Linear Potentiometers?

Linear potentiometers are designed for measuring position. Spectra Symbols manufacture different types of membrane censors that measures linear position within a 0.5mm height range. This world-class feat makes it easier to develop a form factor, which gives OEMs the ability to insert a feedback position sensing even while the device is moving.

Product Material and Design

Depending on client specifications, the standard MagnetoPot model is made of kapton, polyester and fiber glass. Its functions also vary depending on the end-user: it can work as a rheostat, voltage divider, or even as a resistor.

How it Works

The end user achieves linear position sensing by bringing the exterior magnet within the effective range of the internal magnetic attractors. The linear position is determined on the position of the exterior magnet. The MagnetoPot’s electrical output changes relative to the movement of the exterior magnet. The manufacturer cautions end-users to avoid mounting the MagnetoPot to a ferromagnetic surface.

Electrical Output and Internal Drive Magnet

Similar to other types of membrane potentiometer, the MagnetoPot provides linear position feedback relative to the external magnet’s movement.

Spectra Symbol designed the MagnetoPot to use a Neodymium and N42SH grade magnet as the sensor’s primary magnet. The attracting magnets are provided by K&J Magnetics.

In comparison to Reed Switches

As a magnetic sensor, the MagnetoPot features full linear travel. Reed switches on the other hand only provide “open” and “close” signals. The MagnetoPot costs considerably less than other types of magnetic sensors.

The MagnetoPot adds to Spectra Symbol’s existing lineup of potentiometers, which include:

• SoftPot
• HotPot
• ThinPot

About Spectra Symbol

Spectra Symbol has been in the business of designing and manufacturing linear position sensors, membrane switches, and potentiometers for more than 30 years. Established in 1981, the company owns several patents meant to enhance control panel functions. The company’s headquarters is located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
