THE EXPERIENCE OF MOTORCYCLE USE AND MAINTENANCE FROM SENIOR MOTORCYCLE ENTHUSIASTS

The following are some riding and maintenance experience summarized from an experienced motorcycle rider based on Yamaha YBR125, which is similar with other models, and can be used for your reference.

1.

Please ensure that the idle speed at run-in period is around 1300 to 1500 RPM, when the motorcycle is warm up. If it is too high, which will increase fuel consumption, while low idle speed will cause the oil pressure not enough to reach some of the cylinder parts and lead to early wear and tear. In the winter, you can raise the idle speed a little higher, like 1500 RPM. If your motorcycle is just for commuting riding and riding time is around twenty minutes, then I suggest you raise the idle speed to around 1600 RPM. The motorcycle won’t be warmed up enough even after you have already arrived home. This can guarantee the engine lubrication. How to adjust the idle speed: there is a screw outside the carburetor, twist it clock wisely will increase the idle speed, while twist it counterclockwise will decrease the speed.

2.

Start: please open ventilation door at ordinary times, it is easy to start when the battery power is enough. If you forgot to turn on ventilation door, then it will be easy to stall after starting for a few while. At this time, please don’t press the start button again immediately, just wait for around ten seconds, pull open ventilation door, then you can start the motorcycle again and it will be normal. In the cold winter, you may fail to start several times, then please change to the second or third gear, pull the clutch, and push the motorcycle to get a certain speed, loose the clutch, pull off the clutch immediately after the motorcycle is started. Most motorcycles can be started in this way, or two or three times repeatedly. I had tried before that the motorcycle can be started in this way even at minus ten degree.
When the temperature is around 30 degrees Celsius in the hot summer, sometimes the motorcycle can’t be started even by pulling open or close the ventilation door, just close the ventilation door and turn up the throttle a little, and then start the motorcycle.

3.

How to judge the warm up is finished? After turning off the ventilation door, you find the motorcycle can’t be stalled or without pause even after you pull the throttle, which means the warm up is finished. If you are in a hurry, you can adjust the ventilation door to around 3000 RPM and keep it fully closed for half a minute to a minute, and then you can start the motorcycle. Remember not to reach high speed and keep the speed around 25 kph at the second gear for a few minutes, then turn off the ventilation door, it is OK now, but it is better not to do so. When the motorcycle is warm up, and the rotating speed is above 4000 RPM, you can turn down the ventilation door a little to let the speed down to around 2500 RPM, in order to avoid the stack burn out. When warming up the motorcycle, you can use your hands to touch the magneto below the engine, if it is warm but the Cylinder Piston head is a bit hot, then it is OK now.

4.

Some newcomers feel that it is most difficult to learn how to start. Here is: first gently turn up the accelerator a little more, then slowly loose the clutch at the left side, quickly pull the clutch a bit when the rotating speed is reducing, and then step on the accelerator again, then loose the clutch again, gradually, you will find the critical point. You can look for a place where no one is around, to excise starting again and again, no more than one day, you will be familiar with it.

5.

Gear shifting: when you start the motorcycle with the first gear, along with the increase of the accelerator, the engine speed will increase gradually. When it is up to 3500 RPM, you can shift it to the second gear. The method is: quickly pull off the clutch, pick the second gear by your left foot, then pull back a little bit of the accelerator by your right hand, and then slowly loose the clutch and turn up the accelerator slowly to complete the gear up. The shifting speed from second gear to third gear is from 3500 to 4000 RPM and so on. If there is “clicking” sound when you shift the low gear to high gear, which means the gear is jumped, the gear is too high. You should shift to the low gear in time.

Gear should be related to the speed: gear 1 to 2, below 20 kph; gear 2 to 3, 30 kph; gear 4, 40 kph; gear 5, above 45 kph.

When going up the slope, do not fiercely turn up the throttle at high gear, which is harmful. You can choose low gear and high rotating speed.

While going down the slope, due to the low required output power, you can apply high gear and low speed. Remember: sometimes high gear with low speed, low gear with high speed can achieve the same speed, but the principle is: the engine speed should be around 3500 to 3500 RPM. The highest gear is the fifth gear, but you can decide the running speed by yourself.
